SFB Project: Theatrical Analyses of the Heroic in Restoration England

My project focuses on the conceptualisations of the heroic in Restoration England. Focusing on the ›heroic play‹ as the period’s signature genre, I examine how these conceptualisations are negotiated on the London stage in the three decades following the ascension of Charles II to the English throne in 1660.

Hardly any study of the Restoration period has failed to notice the proliferation and erosion of heroic models in the aftermath of the English Civil War, reflecting both general European developments and culturally specific constellations. Questions of the heroic clearly emerge as a point of crystallisation, and, simultaneously, a means of addressing more general cultural issues, positioning negotiations of the heroic at the very core of cultural self-assessments. In particular, the newly opened public stage served as a model of impact and audience response, adressing this presumed ›heroic syntax‹ in a distinctive intersection of political, epistemological and aesthetic discourse.

Most approaches to Restoration heroism have focussed on the representations of hero(in)es in their specific functional contexts. Adopting a slightly different focus, my study zooms in on to the mechanisms and modes of operation which are assumed to underlie heroic figurations and audience response. My case studies concentrate on the resources which are used to lay bare and analyse the mechanisms and operative modes sustaining heroic figurations – incorporating, in particular, approaches from cultural theory, theatre and performance studies, gender studies, and the history of emotions.
