Expressum, “Besuch in der Nachbarschaft” | September 2014
The Freiburg University Library’s e-journal, Expressum, reported on the SFB 948’s school partnership with the Berthold-Gymnasium. Year 12 students at the local secondary school had the opportunity to take a seminar class called “Krieg und Frieden” (War and Peace), making frequent use of University Library resources.

Der Sonntag, “Stahlgewitter und Kriegszitterer” | July 27, 2014
The regional Sunday paper, Der Sonntag, reported on the final session of the SFB 948’s school partnership seminar class, “Krieg und Frieden” (War and Peace). The Berthold-Gymnasium students got to present their final projects, on topics such as shell shock and war memoirs.

Badische Zeitung, “Das macht Schule! Helden am BG” | July 24, 2014
The Badische Zeitung invited the public to attend the student poster presentations at the final session of the SFB 948’s school partnership seminar class, “Krieg und Frieden” (War and Peace). The Year 12 Berthold-Gymnasium students researched topics including child soldiers, aerial warfare and the hippie movement.

The 1913 German film With the Greeks in the Firing Line was shown again in Germany for the first time in almost 100 years as part of the SFB 948 screening series “Der Erste Weltkrieg im Film” (The First World War in Film). The film, which was banned during the First World War and then disappeared into the archives, is a first-hand documentary of the Second Balkan War. The Badische Zeitung reports.



Nordwestradio, “Sind Jogi und die Jungs Helden?” | July 16, 2014
Prof. Dr. Andreas Gelz (Project A5) was interviewed on Bremen radio station Nordwestradio’s morning show, Der gute Morgen, about sports and heroism, looking at the success of the German national football team at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

SRF 1, “Die Gesellschaft braucht Helden” | July 15, 2014
Following the German national football team’s FIFA World Cup victory, the Swiss public radio station SRF 1 interviewed Prof. Dr. Andreas Gelz (Project A5) about the hero’s welcome the team received at Berlin’s Fan Fest. On Echo der Zeit, the station’s oldest politics programme, he discussed Germany’s newly minted sporting heroes, whether present-day Germany requires heroes, and drew similarities between heroism and Angela Merkel’s politics.

Deutschlandfunk Kultur, “Epische Erzählmuster des heroischen Kampfs” | July 15, 2014
Prof. Dr. Andreas Gelz (Project A5) was the “Interview of the Day” on the Deutschlandfunk Kultur programme Studio 9. Looking at the German national football team’s FIFA World Cup victory, he discussed the mechanisms of adoration and veneration, demonstrating how the team’s World Cup journey had all the elements of a heroic saga, including the hero’s welcome they received at the Fan Fest in Berlin.

uni'wissen, the University of Freiburg’s research magazine, published a feature on SFB 948 Project B5: “National Crisis and Political Heroism in the Long 19th Century: Bonapartism in European Comparison”.

uni'leben, “Cyberkrieg und Nerds mit Hornbrille” | July 2014
uni'leben, the University of Freiburg’s periodical newspaper, reported on the SFB 948’s successful school partnership project with the Berthold-Gymnasium. Year 12 students at the local secondary school got to take part in a seminar class called “Krieg und Frieden” (War and Peace), which included critical discussions on different types of warfare, including cyberwars, debating whether heroes are always present.

 

 

SWR2, “Der Erste Weltkrieg im Film” | April 28, 2014
To mark the opening of the screening series “Der Erste Weltkrieg im Film” (The First World War in Film), partly organized by the SFB 948, the SWR2 radio program Journal am Mittag interviewed one of the other co-organizers, Dr. Franz Leithold, Head of the Freiburg University Library’s Media Centre.

uni.tv, “Auf der Suche nach dem modernen Helden” | April 2014
The University of Freiburg’s student TV station, uni.tv, went in search of the modern hero, looking at the parallels and differences between current, everyday heroism and heroic figures from antiquity. SFB 948 speaker Prof. Dr. Ralf von den Hoff lent his expertise in an interview.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bröckling (Project B7) was quoted in an article in the political-culture magazine Cicero. The piece, titled “Helden wie wir” (Heroes Like Us), traces society’s yearning for heroes – which is experiencing a comeback in today’s post-heroic age – mentioning the SFB 948’s research activities.
