Badische Zeitung, “Wie Untugenden zur Tugend wurden” | December 17, 2013
The regional newspaper Badische Zeitung, in an article whose title loosely translates as “From Vice to Virtue”, once again highlighted the SFB 948’s lecture series about artists as heroes (“Künstlerhelden?”), this time with a special look at Rembrandt.

uni'leben, “Verstehen wir uns?” | December 2013
The University of Freiburg’s periodical newspaper, uni’leben, covered a workshop where doctoral students of the SFBs “Heroes – Heroizations – Heroisms” and “Medical Epigenetics” learned how to overcome the challenges of scholarly exchange across disciplines.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper published an article titled “Der menschliche Makel: Äneas bis Snowden – Die Erforschung des Heroischen”, about heroes and superheroes and the research being done at the SFB 948.

The SR 2 KulturRadio programme Länge Sieben aired an interview with Prof. Dr. Michael Butter  (Project B4), discussing Edward Snowden’s hero status.

UNIversalis-Zeitung, “Helden–Heroisierungen–Heroismen” | Summer 2013
Marion Klötzer of the UNIversalis-Zeitung, Freiburg’s newspaper for higher education, interviewed Dr. Ralf von den Hoff, Speaker of the SFB 948, on the centre’s central research questions.

Badische Zeitung, “Von göttlicher Herkunft angeblich” | April 27, 2013
The Badische Zeitung profiled the Department of Art History’s “Künstlerhelden?” lecture series, organized by four SFB 948 members, Prof. Dr. Hans W. Hubert and Katharina Helm (Project A4), and Prof. Dr. Anna Schreurs-Morét and Dr. Christina Posselt-Kuhli (Project B3). The lecture series looks at the elevation of artists to hero status, which was not always the case throughout history.

Badische Zeitung, “Kein Held ohne Opfer” | April 18, 2013
The Badische Zeitung reported on the discussions taking place in the US surrounding the controversial new Distinguished Warfare Medal for drone pilots and cyberwarriors. Can one become a hero without facing physical sacrifice or danger? Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bröckling (Project B7) and Prof. Dr. Michael Butter (Project B4) weighed in.

Badische Zeitung, “Der Held im postheroischen Zeitalter” | February 15, 2013
An account of the SFB 948’s official opening ceremony, held on February 13, 2013, ran in the Badische Zeitung under the title “The Hero in the Post-Heroic Age”. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, the University of Freiburg’s Rector; Dr. Heribert Knorr, Assistant Director of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts; and Prof. Dr. Ralf von den Hoff, Speaker of the SFB 948 kicked off the ceremony with speeches. A panel discussion was then held on the topic of what makes a hero, featuring several visiting scholars.

Prof. Dr. Ronald G. Asch (Vice-Speaker of the SFB 948) spoke with Kira Urschinger of Echo FM, the University of Freiburg’s radio station, about what makes a hero, the transformations of the heroic throughout history, and the structure of our collaborative research centre.

An article in Volume 7 of FRIAS News, “Productive Interplays”, introduced the University of Freiburg’s newest collaborative research centres focusing on the humanities: the SFB 1015 “Otium: Boundaries, Chronotopes, Practices”, and us, the SFB 948 “Heroes – Heroizations – Heroisms”.

WDR 5, “Alltagshelden” | January 8, 2013
WDR 5 radio’s Neugier genügt broadcast a segment on the topic of everyday heroes. Prof. Ralf von den Hoff, Speaker of the SFB 948, discussed their significance, referring specifically to the case of a man named Nico Knebel, who saved his friend from drowning.
