Background: The Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 948 “Heroes – Heroizations – Heroisms: Transformations and Conjunctures from Antiquity to the Modern Day” studies the heroic as a social phenomenon from a long-term perspective that is transculturally as well as synchronically and diachronically comparative. The SFB 948 at the University of Freiburg specifically focuses on the social orders that are stabilized but also brought into question by heroic figures. Within the Collaborative Research Centre, our project (D16) deals with “Semantic Transformation of Prefigurative Heroes in Iran Since 1925”. The project aims to analyse semantic change in the discourse surrounding prefigurative heroes and heroized historical personnages in official Iranian historiography of the Pahlavi state (1925–1979) and the Islamic Republic (1979–present).
